What do you know about corsets in the Victorian era? How much is our perception of them shaped by the movies we watch? What is your idea of corsets and corseting in the 19th century?
That anyone who puts on a corset ends up fainting, and that they are VERY uncomfortable. When I do Dickens Fair I wear a corset, and it's not an unpleasant experience.
Where did this idea of fainting start? Can it all *really* be blamed on that one scene in Gone With the Wind? Or were there other movies? Or something else that shaped our ideas of it being a "torture device"?
I recently wrote an article for Yesterday's Thimble that explores many of the myths and misconceptions surrounding corsets. You might find it of interest!
